Character Information

Name: Rodimus Prime
Canon: Transformers IDW
Canon Point: Issue #13: "Signal to Noise"
Age: Somewhere between 4 and 5. Million years.
Reference: It's pretty lengthy
Setting:

IDW's Transformers is the grimdark continuity, with lots of robogore, robodeath, and robosadness. Most characters are broken on the inside.

Imagine a planet many lightyears away from our own, one that's seen conflict long before the human race existed, and is of mysterious origin. The mechanical planet Cybertron, once home to the giant sentient machines known as Transformers (or Cybertronians), has been ravaged by eons of civil war; one which drove it's native inhabitants to wander the stars. It has currently returned to an untamed, primordial state, allowing it to be inhabited again.

But how did this all happen? Well, let's begin.

Fun Facts on Pre-War Cybertronian Culture

  • Creation Myth: The particularly religious may believe in some variation of the creation myth of their race, which states that their creator god emerged from the core of their planet and split into five entities: Primus(life), Mortilus(death), Epistemus(knowledge), Solomus(wisdom), and Adaptus(change). Known as the Guiding Hand, they created Cybertronians with two forms to serve their society. Mortilus rebelled against the other four, and was struck down by Primus to prevent a catastrophic war, which led to Cybertronians being granted their longevity. Primus also began to die in the process, and retreated into the heart of Cybertron to become Vector Sigma, the super computer from which sparks ("souls") are generated.
  • Primes: The current robot emperor of Cybertron. Most of them are benevolent(Lookin' at you, Zeta Prime). Essentially, a Prime is a Cybertronian that has been bestowed the Matrix of Leadership, a shiny talisman-type thing that is carried in their chests. It is a great source of energy, holds life-giving properties and presumably has a connection to Primus. It also holds the knowledge and wisdom of all the previous Primes to help guide each new one on their way. In Pre-war times, Primes were chosen by the Senate after they spot someone who seems to be showing Matrix affinity, though politics got in the way of that after a time. Each Prime defines an era of their time, similar to dynasties. The Matrix itself appears to have some sort of sentience, as it can call to and physically merge with Cybertronians showing Affinity, to the point where it needs to be surgically removed.
  • Forged v. Cold Construction: The two different ways Cybertronians are "born". Being forged means your spark was naturally harvested from a 'hot spot' generated by the planet itself. Later on, as the hot spots began to become scarce on Cybertron and it's moon, Nova Prime began to implement Cold Construction as an alternate way of creation. While the official story mentioned that it was created by splitting forged sparks, what actually happened was that the energy from the Matrix of Leadership was bled out to create thousands of sparks a day. These new sparks were then implanted in already constructed bodies, while draining the Matrix of its power. Cold constructed Cybertronians were discriminated against for a time, but near the end of Nominus Prime's rule it was considered a non-issue. Currently, over half of all Cybertronians are cold constructed.
  • Functionism(Yes there are -isms): The reasoning behind the strict caste system on Cybertron. Basically, whatever alt mode you are given when you are created will almost always determine your status in society. Alt modes varied from memory sticks to spaceships to planes, et cetera. The more common the alt mode the less value you had in society. Memory stick Cybertronians were so common they were treated as slaves. The oppression caused by this way of thinking led to the infamous Cybertronain Civil War.
  • The Senate: The ruling body of Cybertron before the War. At one point they were looked upon with respect for being "descended" from Cybertronians involved with the Primal lineage(It's important to note that Cybertronians have no biological parents, so it must work some other way.) However, under Nominus Prime's rule, they allowed Cybertron to develop into a oligarchy with a strict caste system that left them at the top of society. Most of the politicians grew steadily more corrupt, often hoarding energon and other resources at the expense of lower level castes. The new Senate under Zeta Prime's rule appeared to be somewhat less extortive, but they didn't last long enough to make any major impact on the war path the previous Senate had set into motion.
  • Empurata & Shadowplay:  Two forms of punishment actively enacted and encouraged by the Senate on people they don't like. Empurata is an ancient ritual where the unwilling victim's head and hands are removed, and then they are given faceless, fingerless replacements so everyone else knows to shun them. As one can imagine, the ritual tends to generate some animosity. Shadowplay is much more insidious means of punishment. If there is an individual that is judged to be a threat to the holding power structure, they are quietly taken to "The Institute", where their brains are tweaked or given a complete overhaul to shut them up. This, in addition to other conditions, helped bring the planet to Civil War.

CIVIL WAR!

With an increasingly shitty way of life, it was only a matter of time before the lower castes would rebel against the holding government and what they stand for. The lower caste miner in this story was Megatron, and the group he led were the Decepticons ("You are being deceived!"). At the time, the Autobots were a part of the security forces led by Orion Pax that worked under the Senate and Zeta Prime, seen as little more than thugs.

A brutal clampdown from the Senate leads to a rebellion, and later a revolution. Orion Pax, after being lured into the heart of Nyon by Hot Rod (Rodimus) discovers that Zeta Prime has been extracting energon from poorer cities and their citizens to fuel war machines combating the Decepticon menace. This revelation causes the former to questions his loyalties. The Decepticons then mount a coup and dispatch Zeta Prime and most of the Senate with great (terrifying) vigor. After Zeta Prime's death, Orion is named the next Prime and becomes Optimus Prime. He attempts to quell the rebellion by stating that the Senate was already gone, and that they could have a peaceful transition of government. We all know what happens next: the two factions go to war and start wrecking their entire planet(and other planets) to shit.

The Decepticons' main goal was corrupted, and eventually grew to aim for creating a galaxy-wide empire. They would do so by infiltrating other planets and totaling any other civilizations that got in the way. The Autobots fight them off in individual units because that shit ain't cool. The war would spread from planet to planet, including a campaign on Earth which went all sorts of horrible..

[four million years later]

The Civil War begins to approach it's final hours when an interdimensional big bad named the D-Void threatens to use Cybertron's core as a portal into their dimension. Its plan? To wreck all life in this universe. Optimus saves the day using the energy from the Matrix of Leadership, as well as accidentally reviving Cybertron. Yay! Although it's at a primordial state, it sends out a message to all Cybertronians spread throughout the galaxy: Come home! Oh yeah, and the fight leaves the Decepticons in a vulnerable state. Autobots win.

Cybertron's civillian/non-affiliated population begins to return home, and they think both factions are goddamn awful for ruining their lives for four million years. Seems pretty reasonable. Prowl, a member of Autobot High Command, named them Non-Affiliated Indigenous Life Forms (NAILs), and the name stuck.

Optimus Prime leaves Cybertron to placate the increasingly angry civillian population, reverting to his previous identity as Orion Pax. The Autobots split into two groups: One(Rodimus& Co) goes off on a mission into space to rediscover their lost culture, the other stays on-world to help organize a new government while trying to keep old hatred at bay.

Other

  • The Lost Light: A starship holding about 200 or so Autobots and commanded by Rodimus. Originally a neutral ship, it was purchased shortly before the latter rallied others to go on a quest to search for The Knights of Cybertron and their lost culture.  The Knights were purported to be the original Cybertronian ancestors that took to the stars long ago.
  • Galactic Council: There's a council of higher-order/spacefaring civilizations that negotiate non-aggression treaties between worlds. A lot of other races depend on them for protection, and lately they've been taking on more of a policing role to do so. Cybertronians are one of the only races that have been blacklisted by the Council,  because they've kinda been flattening everything while they fight their war. After the war ended, relations have been slightly better, but not by much.
  • Other Races: The galaxy in IDW-verse is predominantly organic. There's a lot of races of various sizes and various technological levels, with some human sized and others towering well over their robot neighbors. Most tend to steer clear of Cybertronians because they tend to bring trouble. "Trouble" as in razing their neightbor's home planet.
  • The Tyrest Accord: The first section of The Autobot Code. It's an agreement between both Autobot and Decepticon to keep Cybertronian technology out of the hands of alien races. If you violate this you're in deep doodoo.
Rodimus has been heavily involved in these events since Decepticon uprising began to gain traction. Originally from the city of Nyon (and under the name Hot Rod), he was part of the city's rebel insurrectionists that stood up to Zeta Prime (though they were separate from the Decepticons). He was the one that helped Orion Pax question his loyalties after taking pot shots at his police team and luring him into the heart of the city(it was an ace plan). He later was forced to detonate the entire city after Zeta Prime began to drain its citizens of energon, something that still haunts him to this day.

As the rebellion grew into an all-out war, he joined the Autobots and had several reckless (near death) antics, part of which included leaving Earth in a big babyfit by stealing Ultra Magnus' ship. His actual plan had been to fly over to a Decepticon base and try to retrieve the Matrix of Leadership, which had been taken from Optimus and kept on a big bling chain by Starscream. He's largely successful, but he ended up shot in the chest and killed by Megatron. The Matrix chose to save his life and fuse to his body as he made landing on a distant planet. After some shenanigans, he makes it back to Earth and returns the Matrix to Optimus.

He also helped Optimus save the day when the D-Void threatened their homeworld and the war came to an end. Like Optimus (this is a recurring theme, okay) he makes plans to leave Cybertron after seeing how vehemently despised the Autobots are by the returning neutral population.

Personality:

You would think by the time you start reaching your first million years you'd be a bit more patient, wise, and sagely. But these are Cybertronians we're talking about, and Rodimus is quite the opposite. He's a headstrong, brash, thrill-seeking risk-taker that will do anything to get what he set his mind to. One of his more minor escapades include using the his starship's therapist as monster bait, wrestling said monster himself, THEN having his arms fused into the ship's engine block as part of killing it. But hey, he got new arms! No harm no foul. There's probably several times that he should have died from his more reckless antics(like freefalling into a planet's atmosphere), but somehow he keeps on living.

To supplement his thrill-seeking attitude, he can be incredibly stubborn and bull-headed. He sometimes has a hard time seeing his own flaws, and might end up acting like a bit of an ass without knowing it. He's also not particularly good at taking advice from others, which is the result of his ego. When his second-in-command expressed his disapproval over him using their therapist as bait, he was just annoyed that he was being lectured at all. If someone tries to make him do something, his rebellious nature might have him defy them just on principle. He's the Captain of a ship but has problems with rules and authority. Wait - what?

Well okay, it makes sense given his origin as a rebel back before he joined OP and his merry gang. Quick thinking and trusting his instincts are what kept him alive, and the ruling authority at the time was a ruthless, draconian oligarchy. His experiences with authority haven't exactly been the best, which would understandably bleed into his current opinions and reactions to trying to get ordered around beyond just being a lil shit.

The positive side of this coin is that he has a rather flexible, magnetic personality and is confident when making decisions. Despite his recklessness, his intentions are good at heart(spark?), and he does have intense loyalty for the people who are under his command.  He lets his morals and feelings dictate a lot of what he does, sometimes allowing them to get in the way of his better judgement(See: smashing human machinery after getting really pissed off.). But it also results in a strong sense of what's right and wrong, and he'll always stick to doing what he feels is right over following orders. He'll give a pretty universally distrusted and hated Cybertronian a second chance after talking with them and getting a feel for their reasons. He even defied Optimus Prime himself when he felt he was in the right, deciding it was best to try and leave Earth when the locals clearly didn't want them around.

Despite his seemingly irrational nature, it's shown various times that he's more than capable of improvising plans (ex. luring Orion Pax and his team to the Acroplex, sneaking into a high-security Decepticon prison with the use of a virus, mounting a successful raid on a Decepticon base at Temptoria, etc.). It's his impatience and his emotions that often get in the way. Following events on the Lost Light, he's began to attempt to curtail his more impulsive nature, realizing that just improvising their way to the Knights of Cybertron was going to result in failure. Still, his natural tendency is to act now and ask questions later, making it an uphill battle.

Beneath that fiery exterior also lies some insecurity. He can react pretty badly to failure, and have a lot of guilt chew at him because of it, especially if it results in the deaths or severe injury to people he considers under his care.  Reacting pretty badly falls somewhere in between compulsively doodling on furniture to setting his room on fire and punching holes in the wall. This frustration with himself seems to be linked to when he was forced to detonate his home city of Nyon back in his pre-war days. He felt he needed to save its citizenry from a particularly gruesome death-by-hematophagia, but felt guilty regardless for not being able to find a better solution. The same situation repeated itself several times through the course of the war, where people that were under his care ended up dying. It's recently gotten to the point where he finds sacrificing himself to be the 'cheap' way out, because he can't continue to make amends if he's dead.

In addition to that, he's taken it upon himself to call himself the next Prime due to showing Matrix affinity (it also helps lend to his pride). Considering the guy who came before him, those are some big shoes to fill, and he's eager to try them on. He can't stand the thought of being looked down upon by his peers, and he'll go to great lengths to prove his worth to others, even if he almost gets killed in the process (or actually killed.). The whole Lost Light quest could arguably be called just another attempt at assuming responsibility and trying to prove he can be a good leader (but he'll be annoyed if it is).

Reaction to Tushanshu: He's going to be flattered that he's one of the ~few~ that got picked for some sort of super special save-the-world role. It'll feed his hero complex quite nicely, actually. He'd like to say that needing to fight in a war again is lamentable, but the truth is that he's been fighting for so long that war has pretty much become the default. Going on missions to stop some sort of enemy feels more at home than trying to deal with the intricacies of peacetime. He'll probably assume that most people know he's a giant robot (they saw to his arrival, right?) and will be a little more open to interacting with them sans disguise.

Appearance:

He's the gaudy one striking a big heroic pose

Abilities:
  • giant robot that turns into a tacky space car and stands at just under 20 ft.
  • pretty hardy due to being Cybertronian. He'll usually be able survive most things short of getting his spark crushed.
  • Flame-out: raises body temperature to a burning point and expels a wave of fire. Lots of fire. Fire that was intense enough to fry other robots in the same room. On the flipside, it's very energy intensive and only used as a last resort.
  • Blasters: Just as the name sounds. Three gun barrels are built into each forearm and shoot concentrated energy blasts. Well, or fire. It wouldn't be Rodimus without the fire. There's also the extra option of super hot blue fire when he needs to trash his room.
  • Stupid crazy stunts: he's had a lot of time to practice and accumulate these. Basically, what he lacks in patience and responsibility he makes up for in fantastical awesome combat moves.
  • Holomatter projection: Operating on alien worlds have left the Autobots developing solid-light avatars to make it easier to interact with the local populance. Some recent upgrades on the Lost Light allows the projector in question to auto-generate an avatar based on their personality or fine-tune and customize it manually. It also has numerous extra little features such as a false identity and next-gen hair (which still doesn't look right). I'll be making his actor Michelle Rodriguez
Inventory:
  • (1) (mostly) depleted half of the Matrix of Leadership. It has the appearance of a crystal half-sphere with a diameter of about 3-4 feet. When a beam of light is radiated onto it, it projects a star map which presumably leads to the land where Cybertron's ancestors went to. The Matrix corrupts any attempt to record the map, including photos, video, and even the viewer's memory. While recalling that one has seen the map isn't an issue, the details are always blurred or unclear. That mystical robot DRM is really a bitch. It's also still capable of activating dormant Cybertronian hot spots should Rodimus come into contact with one for some reason.
  • Robot sized-knife. His preferred tool for doodling on furniture.
Suite:

Three story building in the Fire Sector. He's passionate, he's easily excited, and he wore hot rod flames on his chest for the greater part of his life span.

Third Person:

[expanding on the Winter Wonderland option of the Test Drive meme]

Okay. Maybe trying to take a drive down the icy path in the outer areas of Tu Vishan wasn't the best of Rodimus' ideas. Cybertron's streets weren't exactly built with ice sheets in mind, and his tires were constructed to reflect that. He had a little difficulty gaining traction over various surfaces, but there was only so much he could attempt to grip when the ground underneath him was frozen solid.

That said, he was quickly growing tired of the usual protocol of staying hidden and covert. Of keeping himself locked up in a building while he explored in an avatar he couldn't feel the world with. He understood the need for a disguise on Earth, or even on planetary hubs like Hedonia. The populace was easily disturbed, their reputation with other aliens isn't the best, etc., etc. He could guess a list of reasons he would get were he to bring the topic up. And sure, they made sense on Earth. But here?

Here was different. Strange occurrences and alien inhabitants were expected. But more important than that, they were wanted. As far as he understood, he was brought here to fight some sort of war. To help the locals conquer some sort of evil. That? That was something he would be proud of participating in. It wasn't something to hide away.

But even someone as brash as him wouldn't immediately jump to breaking cover. Not yet, anyway. He could compromise as long as his limited patience allowed it, but he still needed a way to work off the tension of being here. Some way of settling the thoughts of home and what he'd been plucked from to participate. Even if this reality was supposed to be locked in time, there was always the chance that it wasn't

So with his thoughts firing off almost as insistently as the mechanisms of his roaring engine, Rodimus ran a path through the city, slipping into the least populated areas he knew. He enjoyed the bitting chill of the wind on bare armor and the near misses of whatever obstacles the city wanted to throw at him. It was refreshing. It was invigorating. It was everything he could ask for for that small moment.

Well, until he began to approach a particularly sharp corner at the end of the road. Under normal circumstances, a little oversteering and play of the brakes would have sent him drifting in a well-practiced maneuver which ended in an elegant halt. Unfortunately, when he began to hit his brakes, his tires locked up  and he began to slip rapidly across the ground.

"Scrap!"

A pile of snow and the wall of something hard-surfaced brings him to a sudden, painful stop.

Network:

I'll have to admit, not having any sort of mobile communication is getting pretty old pretty fast.

[That sure is a woman on the feed, looking more than just a little flustered at a local cafe terminal she'd just accessed.]

So. I'd like to get to know all the guys I'll be trying to stop the universal evil with. Maybe make up some smoke signals for when the thing attacks since comm links don't exist.

[Was she serious or just being a sarcastic ass?]

Oh, and the name's Rodimus.

["Jane Human" just doesn't seem like a convincing name. Thanks Holomatter generator, you gave it your best shot.]
